To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines is offering a similar cruise on-board the Balmoral – presumably less the icebergs and ensuing horror.
At first, the idea of a Titanic themed cruise sounded a little creepy – with nearly the same Southampton to New York City route, food based on the original menu, and a ceremony at the time the ship began to sank 100 years prior. Though many are seeing it as an opportunity to learn and pay homage to the 1500 people who lost their lives.
Several of the guests booking the cruise are relatives or direct descendants of those who were on-board the Titanic, and may have never been able to come close to their final resting place. Some of those relatives will be giving lectures on board, including the grandson of one of the survivors.
“I’m sure my grandfather, a first class steward on Titanic, would be proud to know his story will be shared with the passengers on the Balmoral.”
The ticket prices for the Titanic cruise are a little over $5000 USD – but for those fascinated by the history of the event – a small price to pay for the experience.
What do you think? Would you like to attend this cruise?
What a great way for all the family of the victims involved in the tragic event to be able to re live what the ancestors went through. Although I am not sure whether Balmoral is the right ship I would much prefer if they had chosen Queen Mary 2 or Queen Victoria as they offer a much more grand cruise experience.
We plan to attend on board this cruise but its starting range is about $5000 per person to $14,000 depending on which rooms you take. I am hoping they will theme the ship as otherwise the extra costs would be useless but so far there isn’t too much mention as to whether people will dress the part at times. They mention theme events but not what will be involved. However, seeing its still a yr and a half away maybe it will be more clear what will be involved as well as if people traveling overseas can rent outfits on board the ship for those events.
Interesting – so there’s talk of people dressing in period clothing?
